My cat is pretty old, and we think he just has a simple cold, but he has runny eyes and a stuffy nose, and his meow is all clumsy and not right,

I took a video with my camera, so you can see.

P.s, I cannot take him to the vet today, because my moms at work, and I'm only 13, I cant drive!

What do I do?

  1. The tag on that vid is from July 26th 07 Why are you posting??

  2. Seems as though he most likely has a upper respiratory infection. URI's do not go away on their own, they require antibiotics. Most likely the cost at the Vet will be for a exam fee plus medication. Have your Mom call asap and make an appointment. For now, you can put him in the bathroom with you when you take a shower, the steam may help loosen up some of the mucus. Don't let this go for more than another day, the longer you wait the worse it can get. Good luck!!

  3. Give him some honey. It might cause diaherra but will take the cold away. Make sure he has plenty of normal food. But i would give him a spoonful.

  4. HI there,

wow he just look so much like my cat. he may just have a cold, but if he doesnt seem to get better tomorrow maybe you might want to ask your mom to help you get him to the vet..

  5. for now untill you can get your cat to the vet, use some eye drops... or saline solution to clean out her eyes.

she has a eye infection - the vet will end up giving her some vigomox - or something close to vigomox to help clear up the infection.  It is basically eye drops with a antibiotic in it as well.  For now to help ease up her discomfort you can put some simple eye drop - or contact saline solution in her eyes.  she could have a blocked tear duct as well...

  6. When your mom gets out of work, go to an animal hospital. They are open later than vets and take walk-ins. It's better for a vet to recommend a treatment for your cat.

  7. I would not suggest giving an old sick cat anything that can make him have diarrhoea... honey doesn't cure a cold anyway and having diarrhoea is only going to make him weaker (no offense Lily).

Keep him inside and keep him warm. You can use Karvol capsules or Olbas Oil in hot water to help alleviate the stuffy nose. Don't let him drink it (he probably wont want to anyway) just let him inhale it by putting it in a bowl close to him. Although unless he is in a cage this can be tricky coz he is likely to just move away from it.

He should get some antibiotics from the vet but he'll be fine to wait until tomorrow for your mum to take him.

  8. Since cat flu is viral, it cannot be cured; rather, the cat's body must fight off the infection, which takes around 3-14 days. your cat can only recover from proper veterinary treatment.i just lost my cat 2 weeks ago from this problem, but she did have a tumour as well..

get your mom to take the cat to the vets as soon as possible in the morning,in the mean time you may be able to Steam your cat which can help clear the nasal passages and make the cat feel more comfortable. My cats have been having steams for years because they suffer from chronic post-viral rhinitis ("the snuffles"), and they love them. In the lounge, and then they can stay in their basket afterwards but still have some company. This is how i steam them:

put cat in a secure carrying basket and lock it.

Place a bowl of boiling water in front of the basket (where the cat can't dip his/her paws in, naturally).

Drape the whole lot with towels and leave for 15-20 mins (check regularly to ensure cat is not distressed).

Do this three times a day while symptoms are present.

    Nasal Drops

Saline nose drops may help if your cat is very congested. Your vet will tell you which ones are safe to use and how much to give. One American brand is Little Noses (1/8% phenylephrine), which is a decongestant nose drop for children. A commonly prescribed dosage for cats is one drop in each nostril twice a day. However, this brand now apparently has preservatives added, which would make it unsuitable for cats. You need drops containing only buffered sterile saline solution, and these should only be used for a maximum of three days, or they may cause a rebound effect.
