Question:

Please help, how do I solve. I keep coming up with a slightly different answer.?

y-2=1/2(x-9)

I keep coming up with y-2=1/2(x-9)

y-2/2=1/2x 2/2-9/2

y=1/2x-7/2

However the correct answer is y=1/2x-5/2

Could you please show me what i am doing wrong or work the problem out completely so I can see where my mistake is at. Thank you I appreciate your time

  1. Remember that when you convert a whole number to fraction, you must put it over 1 first and then multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number.

    You wrote 2/2, which would be 2 ÷ 2, and that is equal to 1, not 2.

    What you want is:

    2/1 = 4/2

    Then, -9/2 + 4/2 = -5/2

    Other than that, you might want to be careful about writing changes on the same line (you wrote 2/2 on the right side without it being canceled on the left). That's just about good clear form though, which is mostly to help you.

    ----

    y - 2 = ½ ( x - 9 )

    y - 2 = ½ x - 9/2

    y = ½ x - 9/2 + 4/2

    y = ½ x - 5/2

  2. y - 2 = 1/2(x - 9)

    y = 1/2x - 9/2 + 2

    y = 1/2x - 9/2 + 4/2

    y = 1/2x - 5/2

    Answer: y = 1/2x - 5/2

  3. y - 2 = 1/2(x - 9)

    ==> y - 2 = (1/2)x - 9/2

    ==> y =  (1/2)x - 9/2 + 2

    Now...take -9/2 + 2 and simplify this.

    -9/2 + 4/2 = (-9 + 4)/2 = -5/2

    So this gives you:

    ==> y =  (1/2)x - 5/2

    Does this help??

  4. Ok, so you want 'y' to be on one side and 'x' on the other side. So you would want to get the -2 on the right side with the 'x'. Then it would look like this:      y=1/2(x-9)+2

    Since you would distribute 1/2 to x and -9, it would look like this:

                             y=1/2x-4.5+2

    Then you combine -4.5+2 which would equal -2.5. Now it's this:

                             y=1/2x-2.5 or y=1/2x-5/2

                                        ****************

    Now for what you did wrong:

    You divided the -2 on the left side when you were supposed to do the reverse operation, which was addition. So therefore you divided on the other side also, causing you to produce an inaccurate answer.

  5. y-2 = 1/2 (x-9)

    y-2 =1/2 x -9/2

    add 2 on both sides

    y-2 +2 = 1/2 x -9/2 +2

    find the common demoniator  which is 2because  -9/2 +2 si the same as -9/2 +2/1

    y= 1/2 x -9/2 +2/1

    y = 1/2 x -5/2

  6. multiply both sides by 2

    LHS=2y-4

    RHS=x-9

    2y=x-5

    y=(x-5)/2

  7. Second step, where you have

    y - 2 = 1/2(x-9) [lets multiply by 2]

    2(y - 2) = x - 9 [distribute the 2]

    2y - 4 = x - 9 [add 4 to each side]

    2y = x - 5 [divide by 2]

    y = x/2 - 5/2 [which is the same as]

    y = 1/2*x - 5/2

  8. The problem is that you're changing -2 to -2/2 and -2/2 does not equal -2, it equals -1. However, you are correct to want to get fractions with like denominators, so change -2 to -4/2, because -4 divided by 2 does equal -2.

    So...

    y - 2 = 1/2(x - 9)

    y = (1/2)x - 9/2 + 2

    y = (1/2)x -9/2 + 4/2

    y = (1/2)x - 5/2

    Have a good day!
