  1. In that job what counts is who you know, not what you know. If you don't have relatives or friends in the industry, chances are, you're not getting in.

  2. On the show, it actually shows the captains calling up the greenhorns themselves, so the best advice would be to start emailing and calling to get their attention.  Start by googleing "dutch harbor, alaska crab boats" ( many are based out of that town).  In the off season some of them fish out of seattle, wa for cod and salmon.  You will need to plan on going to alaska, however.

The closest thing you'll find like this in CC is possible as a mate on a long line grouper/snapper boat, or as a stone crabfisherman, or as a shrimper. Trust me, you'll find the weather/fishing much nicer in CC as opposed to AK.  Go to a few marinas where they keep commercial fishing boats and start talking to the crews and captains. They'll help you out, its a field with high turnover, so they are always looking for greenhorns.  Most of the commercial fishermen/marinas will be based on the inshore side of the island, not on the island itself.

If you have a problem locating the fishermen, go to a local fish market and ask where they buy their catch from.

  3. Great experience and a dangerous one also. I think to catch king crab you need to be in the Bering straits..NOT TEXAS.

If you really want to do this contact the fishing fleet up in Alaska and send in a resume, I would get the name of the ship I want to be on and the town they are located in and follow up from there.

    GOOD LUCK
