Please help, my budgie..?

Ok well I was asleep when I heard my budgie Jazz flying rapidly around her cage. I thought she was just being herself but it wouldn't stop and so I went down to see if she was ok. Her wings were spread apart and she was very limp. She lives with another budgie. They had fresh water, food and cage, and a cloth covering the cage so I don't know why she was like this. I took her out and stroked her gently, and she started sitting on my finger then fluttering her wings some more. I put her back in the cage and she just clung to the side not moving. She was breathing normally. I put my finger to stroke her and she moved away, her old self. What it wrong with her? It's 4 in the morning here, will she be OK? I will call the vet in the morning.

Thank you.

  1. It is still best to see the vet but it could have been a night terror.  Cockatiels are more prone to these though budgies have them as well.  Basically it is a nightmare or something (shadow perhaps) that spooks the bird.

It could also have been a fight between the two, not at all uncommon with birds.

  2. Budgie's are natural problem factories and get jumpy all the time. Maybe she scared or a sudden noise or something dropping to the ground startle her. That happend once with my budgie. He was sleeping fine then i accidently dropped a tissuebox on the floor with a  bang and he jumped up and kept flapping his wings and looking around. eyes alert

  3. I had a bunch of those little darlings at one time and they have little arguments and the one you describe is the martyr.  Its an alpha thing.  Eventually, one will overpower the other.  usually the male.  (just like in humans)  You should still call the vet.

  4. It sounds to me like she had a night terror. They can be triggered by a noise, a movement or if the room is dark they can get disoriented. Check her over to be sure there are no broken feathers or bleeding. If her breathing has gone back to normal she should be okay. You can try putting a small night light by her cage- that often helps to prevent these episodes. If it happens again, quickly turn on a light, talk or sing to her to calm her down, put some music on and wait until she calms down before turning off the lights.

  5. All you can do is wait for the vet.  Right now just keep the bird comfortable until you get directions from the vet.

    I hope I helped!
