I will be relocating to Modesto in the next 2 weeks and was hoping somebody local could answer a few questions. I have temporary housing until I am able to find something permanent, but I am hoping to make the housing search process as short as possible.

I have an 8 year old daughter who will need to begin 3rd grade. I need to know when the school year starts for elementary schools in Modesto?

Also, I am planning on going back to school and continue my studies in ASL (sign language) at the junior college. I am not familiar with the area at all and need to know which elementary schools are near the Junior college as I am hoping to target my housing search for that area.

This is assuming that the schools in this area are highly rated, as my daughter's education is a high priority!

One last thing..... I would prefer to live in a neighborhood with a large deaf population if there is one in Modesto. I am hoping to become rather involved in the deaf community and would again like to focus my housing search on this fact.

  1.   I'm not sure why you are choosing Modesto, particularly if you wish to have a high population of deaf people.  You might consider relocating to Riverside, CA, instead.  This is home to the California School for the Deaf and has a high population of deaf people because of this.  In addition, there is Riverside City College, which offers ASL courses, good schools and many excellent colleges, including University of Ca, Riverside, California Baptist University and others.

  2. Modesto is so boring.

  3. I'd assume you're moving for work because I don't understand why anyone would move to Modesto and not Sac if they're coming to this area.

  4. I would suggest living in any area between Standiford/Sylvan Ave., Oakdale Rd., Yosemite/Maze Blvd., and just west of highway 99.

La Loma is one of the most prestigious areas in Modesto, but you will want to stay away from Shackelford, Bystrom, The Airport District, Bret Harte, and South Modesto in general...possibly look into living along Standiford Ave.,  or Scenic Dr., but these are just suggestions.

As for schools, I would definetly suggest Enslen Elementary for the area you are looking at.

I really don't think there is an area of Modesto with a higher number of deaf people, so you may be out of luck there.

Modesto also has two public transportation systems, a city only(MAX) and a county-regional(StaRT), the city is also served by Greyhound buses as well as Amtrak San Joaquins. MAX(Modesto Area Express) offers a direct bus line from Modesto to BART in Livermore, connecting you to possible jobs in the Bay Area.

Good luck, and remember these are just suggestions.
