My chicken has just been attacked, it looks like it was a cat, there is a bit of blood, but only a scratch. However it cannot walk, I don't know if it has a broken leg or what, it just limps. More worringly, it won't start breathing normally, it is still panting in shock it seems, breathing really fast and strange, it may be in great pain or in a complete state of shock, or both. How can I help and take it out of this shock? I tried sitting it on my lap with a warm towel, stroking it gently but it is still so shocked. Please help, I love my chicken...

  1. Ive seen this before.... The sky is falling.

  2. Hope I'm not too late - it defianately sounds like shock. It needs to be put somewhere warm but dark and that should help alot...

  3. Take it to the vet, shock can kill.

  4. chickens are normally quite a hardy bird and only go in to a state of shock if there hurt i have had chicken for years so i would take your chicken to the vets

  5. keep it warm and give it water if it wants it,and also, bring it to the vet...(if your not going to bring it to the vet keep it warm and give it water still in a quiet place...)

  6. There is alot of chicken rapists about... call the police. its beastiality against the chickens will. take that ***** to court.

  7. i believe it is a cat because my friend had 2 chickens and 1 of them died of a cat and the other had been tortured because it feathers had been scratched ofF

maybe you should treat the wound with antibiotics and call a VET

  8. Bring your hen indoors in a cardboard box and keep her in a quiet, warm and dark place. Leave her there for an hour or so.

Allow her access to feed and water. You can include marmite on toast as it's packed with B vits which helps chickens to recover and settle. Add some Avipro or poultry tonic to her drink or calcium supps like Davinova C as this will help heal her limp. You can add limestone flour to her feed too as this is also a calcium supplement and is easily absorbed into the hens body. You can buy this from most livestock and equestrian stores.

The limp can be caused by stress but you need to pick her up and feel around her joints to see if anything is swollen or broken. If you pretty sure there's no injury then the limp is probably due to stress. Hens have been known to go lame temporarily if they become very stressed usually after an attack. She could continue to limp for another 3 weeks. If you're unsure whether she's injured it, it's best to seek the vets advice.

Treat the wound with either gentian violet (purple spray) or aloe vera spray as these both have anti-septic qualities and help the healing process. If it's punctured the skin your hen may require antibiotics as cats carry germs.

You should also ensure if you have any other remaining hens that they are also OK and safe from further attack. You may notice a drop in egg production for a while due to the attack.

I really hope your hen improves! Best wishes!!

  9. I would phone a vet. My colleague also went to the vet with her chicken. They treated it like a pet. So just give it a try. Good luck !
