o my gosh i'm totally freking out it's 3:30am and i just went downstairs to check on my guinea pigs because i couldn't sleep. I took one out and noticed it was having a hard time chewing so i went to look at it's teeth and his top two teeth are GONE looks like torn off because there are little jagged stubs.

I'm taking him to the vet in an hour when there is an open spot.

My question is what do you think, is there a chance he will live? is it life threatning?, i would think so since he cannot grab food like he could before.....he is only 2years old.

PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR OPINION AND TIPS ON WHAT I CAN DO!!! this is like me baby :( :( help

  1. One of the most common injuries to a guinea pig is incisor tooth damage. This is usually the result of them being dropped by their owners or leaping out of their hands as they are lowered back into their quarters or onto the ground.

Without the teeth, the animal quickly learns how to manipulate it's tongue to draw in the food. Where the cavy has lost one set of teeth, it is advised to trim the opposite set well back, so that the two sets can regrow in balance.

If needed you can help with some syringe feeding, but it is amazing how quickly the teeth come through again and they get back to normal feeding.

Just keep an eye on him and make sure he's eating and he'll be fine.

  2. dont worry... now calm down and keep reading if his teeth are completely gone then this is a bad situation but if you can see his teeth then you dont have to worry so much.now think would you rather have  him have lost his foot or what he has now. if he doesnt make it wich he will (he has a 99.99 percent chance of living) just   take him to the vet and h**l be fine

  3. Calm down! Losing teeth is not life threatening; just like if we lose our teeth, we're not going to die!

OK now that you're calm, it's very strange that his teeth tore off as you described it. What is he eating? Is there anything very hard in his cage he likes to chew on? It's good you're getting him to a vet soon. Losing teeth is serious only because the guinea can't eat. You will have to hand feed him for a while, and if he's in pain, you might have to give him pain medication. Are you going to an EXOTICS vet or a vet who is very experienced and guinea pig savvy? If not, you won't get the treatment the guinea pig needs. Guinea pig dental related things can be very complicated and a regular cat and dog vet will not have the tools or experience necessary to fix them. They will grow back eventually, but it will take a while. A experienced vet will have to file down your pigs teeth so they're straight and not jagged. As long as he's not in serious pain and seems to be handling it well, there is nothing much you can do. Just hold him for a while and keep him happy.

  4. It sounds like the piggie has had an accident of some sort and broke his teeth.

You'll need to take him to a qualified EXOTICS vet that is experienced with guinea pigs. The broken teeth will regrow fairly quickly, but during this time, the bottom front incisors will grow too. Since there are no top ones to keep the bottom ones in check, they will overgrow. The vet will also need to check the gums for any infection that may be starting where the teeth broke off.

You may need to handfeed your piggie while he adjusts to having no teeth. This is very important, as guinea pigs MUST eat constantly to keep their digestive tract in proper working order. You will want to ask the vet for some Oxbow Critical Care, which is a feeding supplement for herbivores. See this link for instructions on handfeeding:

I hope everything turns out well.
