I have a digestive system problem called IBS and it affects me everyday.I get sick at least once a day.I have to eat certain foods and no medicines I have or medicines that doctors prescribe me dont help me at all. I have to have surgery in 14 days and school starts back in 9 more days. I have problems with going to school because I get sick so much and I always miss alot of days because of my digestive problem.I miss class alot because I am always late because of my sickness, and I have low grades (almost failing) because I cannot concentrate on my work because of my problems. I go to high school and I will be going to 10th grade this year. I live in Tennessee (USA).

My mom was homeschooling my brother last year (he is in middle school) but she told me that she cant home school me because she doesnt have a bachelers degree and she said that she has to have a bachelers degree to homeschool me.

Please help me! I need to be put on homebound where a teacher comes to my house every week instead of me going to school. How can I make this happen? If I have to go back to school this year...I am afraid I will fail because of my sickness.

  1. ur parent will have to contact the school or school board in ur area..i had to do this for my daughter a few years back..it takes a lil while so hopefully ur mom will get to it quickly...my daughter didnt have a teacher come to the house, she did schooling online..i forgot the name but the school should be able to tell you whats available

  2. Have your doctor write a note or letter explaining why you need to be placed on HomeBound Instruction.  You might need another letter every six or nine weeks, depending on how long Tennessee will let you stay on it at a time.

Does Tennessee have the K-12 Virtual Academy online school option?  If so, that might be better than just an hour or two instruction a week.

If you homeschool as Option II or III, your mom doesn't need a BA.

  3. First of all, you have to find out if homebound even exists at your school or in your district. Call the school district to answer that. They will be able to tell you what's available and what you would need to do to sign up for it.

For homeschooling, your mom is sort of right. If you can sign up with a church-based umbrella school, then she can homeschool you as long as she has a GED or high school diploma. Contact a homeschool association to find out more about what is available under this option. Here are 2 that I have found: http://tnhea.org/  http://www.tnhomeed.com/
