Hello. I'm a 21 y/o female college student. I have 28 teeth, 3 wisdom teeth still coming, 1 wisdom tooth extracted, and 11 of my teeth have cavities. 3 are big ones, the others are smaller ones. When I was a baby all of my teeth came in rotten for some reason so I spent a lot of time at the dentist & needed surgery. I grew up in a low-income household. We brush our teeth once a day & I floss sometimes. I didn't go to the dentist every 6 months either. Well, we're no middle-class & I'm about to get braces but I feel like "what's the point? I'll lose my teeth before I'm old anyway." Also my mouth hurts on both sides but I no I don't have anymore cavities. So what can it be? What do you think about all of this? Thank you!!!

  1. well, i think you'd better have your own dentist to keep track on your teeth...

  2. that sucks!  but just take all the steps to take care of your teeth--go to the dentist, brush twice a day (they say at least 2x a day but they really want you to do it after EVERY MEAL and i was like.. ooer.  I'm lucky if i remember to brush), use mouthwash, floss.  I think that if you know that you're giving it your best effort then you will feel better.

maybe you can get fluoride to put on your teeth, it makes them harder.  I know, i had to get it because i have soft teeth and i get cavities a LOT.  Or you can get a painting of enamel, like... remember in elementary school when you got it at school?  well, i did anyway.

maybe you can go again and ask about the pain on the side of your mouth.  if you just got your cavities filled it could be from that.  take ibuprofen (motrin, etc.)  or maybe the problem is deeper.

well, you know, braces are not mandatory but they do help your teeth look better.  maybe you can get the invisalign kind so you won't have to have the cement on your teeth (it can stain your teeth!)

just work on having all your teeth when you're old because false teeth are creepy.

oh p.s. are your wisdom teeth kinda in?  because i got mine out this past spring break but i was supposed to get it at the end of 2006.  yeah really.  oh my god.  they put me out but afterward it hurt so bad!  ugh it sucks.  but it's ok now.  get them out soon before they start pushing your other teeth around.

  3. Don't give up! There's so much that can be done! First, start looking after them a bit more, brush twice a day, before bed ad after breakfast. Maybe a mouth wash too. And floss too! Then find yourself a friendly dentist (ask around) who will hep  you. Your cavities can be filled (please don't use mercury or amalgam though, ask for white fillings, they are better for  your health they think) and maybe ask about sealing them to help. It will be expensive but some dentists offer budget plans

Try and keep them, make it a priority, if  you loose lots of teeth, it will change your face shape and affect your sense of well  being (you may end up hating  your family for letting it happen.

Don't despair! Grasp the nettle! It will be expensive but worth it!
