here is the real thing, i am using ADSL through my modem which is connected through USB cable in my main PC.

I have in total 6 PC's all of them have Win XP in them.

here are the questions:

what IP should i insert in my server & 5 clients?

what should be default gateway? I mean should it be different in every PC?

This is the most interesting part, If i disable the LAN them on my server I can use the internet, else I cannot.

Please help me.

  1. basic design is this.

Server (PC) to the hub or switch, all PC go the hub or switch.

ADSL modem or router goes to the hub or switch.

This is spoke technolgy - everything hangs off the hub/switch.

Either you buy a IP for each device or set up proxey in the server to issue ip's to the PC's and you then use just one IP that you have now.

  2. You should get a router. This automates the connection and will be faster. Your knowledge of networking is likely to get you into serious problems for a commercial network.

  3. if you are going to have more than 1 pc connected to the internet you need to get a hub/switch/router to distribute and network all your pc's together. if you are going to have a server in place, or use a pc as a server same process. Let your hub be the dhcp server and make sure that you create a network group name on all pc's so they can see each other. IP address will stay within the range of how many IP's you give out on your business network.
