There are so many I am new to homeschooling my son is advanced for his age and not getting anything from public school. Any good websites out there.

I also have a 6 month old so I dont have a lot of time for planning so I need something that I can spend two or three hours a day with him.

Any advice out there?

  1. 2 - 3 hours a day vs a more than 5 hour school day where much of the learning is learning to work with others - not sure how that helps much.

A typical teacher spends a great deal of time on each lesson and unit in preparation prior to teaching - to pick up something canned and try to do it without preparation and planning will be less effective.  The people that I know that have homeschooled spent a lot more than a couple of hours a day.

You can enrich his curriculum at home - or discuss with his teacher how to challenge him more -

  2. Do you want a Christian Curriculum or Secular? A great Christian program is Sonlight. It has the lesson plans done for you. You have to add Math and maybe science but its not hard to add them.

You do need to know the law in your area. You can find them at http://www.hslda.org The laws are different in every state.

You need to figure out what kind of learner you son is. Is he a hands on or a listener? What ever program you chooce you should also be enjoying it. If you don't like it then you may not want to do it.

  3. If you need planning and progress help like I did when I started HS'ing (and still do), then I highly recommend you look into K12:

I've mentioned it in some other answers to you today.  Not only is the curriculum fantastic, and set up to help all types of learners, but the planning & progress tools for the parents are priceless, IMO.  There is very minimal prep time with K12.  It is challenging and fun - for both student and parent.  Plus, you can mix and match grade levels (we have from 5th-9th right now) and go at various speeds through the courses.  The price might look high, but you get soooo much for that!  The materials are high quality and wonderful!

  4. If you're Christian, or can work with a Christian curriculum, I'd like to suggest my favorite:  Christian Light Education.  It's very easy to use.  The work is laid out in daily lessons, and the TMs are pretty well scripted especially in the primary grades.  It's structured so that even a regular 7yo can work very independently for most things.  It's very academically sound.  My students have always done well in their annual tests using this.  You could if you prefer use it for only the Reading/Language Arts/Math, and do whatever else you like for science and history until he gets to high school,  My ds learned way more science from independent reading and direct obvservations than from workbooks.  www.clp.org  Request a catalog first, and please do use the diagnostic/placement tests to get the right level.
