I got a hamster a couple days ago (a black bear syrian hamster) and ever since the first day i brought her home i noticed shortness of breath symptoms (like asthma), and they went away about 20 minutes later, I seem to get these in the evening time, now i have had her for about four days now and today when i took her out of the cage and played with her i had the shortness of breath feeling again, have itchy ears (inside) and i sneezed too, it seems to be getting worse and i wanted to know if i should give her away or do you think these symptoms will get better with time?

oh and i am using carefresh bedding which has no odor, so i dont think its that

  1. take her to the vet, dont just give her away

  2. ear infection

  3. Don't give her away, that wouldn't be nice. =[ Cheak her tail and make sure she doesn't have wet tail disease. Also take her to the vet.

  4. It sounds like you are allergic to your hamster. What else are you allergic to? It could be that you are not even allergic to your hamster, maybe its just the pollen outside. Hmm... even though carefresh bedding is THE best bedding you could buy you might be allergic to that. Experiment with another aspen bedding. I recommend the bedding called "Yesterday's News".

If you don't get better after a month or so it would probably benefit you buy giving the hamster to a relative or a friend. You could even give it to a local animal shelter. Just don't let the hamster out loose in the wild thinking that it would have "a better life outdoors" I am sure a vet would take your hamster though.

Best of Luck, and I hope that you get better and that all works out for you =-D

  5. Try keeping her for maybe a month more, and if it still persists, then I would give her away. I'm sorry, hamsters are a joy t have. I own one (8

  6. it could a mild allergic reaction. I recommend to take the hamster to the vet and test any allergies at the doctors.

  7. youre probably allergic to her or the bedding. carefresh even though its orderless can cause allergy problems not to mention hamsters fur. im allergic to my hamster too. if you just buy some clariton it should help you (make sure its clariton clear though so you dont get drowsy) its about 10 dollars at the store. or go to your doctors and get allergy medication

  8. Yup, you are allergic to your hamster. The asthma reaction is nothing to sneeze at!  Seriously, asthma is a real health hazard that must not be ignored and won't go away with time.  If the problem gets worse with a dirty cage, than you definitely should reconsider your choice of pets.  I think that most of the answerers think a vet would be a good person to give the hamster to. I agree with them.

  9. You must have some allergy to hamsters. Ask your doctor?

  10. You could be allergic to hamster dander.  Just like people are allergic to cats, dogs or horses.  Have you had any hamsters before this one? Normally if you buy a hamster from a pet store they give you a 7 day guarantee.  Try taking it back and telling them that you're allergic to it and they should give you your money back and take the hamster back as well.  It sucks that you're allergic to your new pet though! :[
