In an evening, a sporting goods store sold twice as many T-shirts as shorts. T-shirts are $9 each, and shorts are $14 each. The total amount of money taken in for both items was $256. Find the number of each that was sold.

Thank you very much!

  1. Let x be t shirts and y  be shorts

    x=2y --- You get from the first sentence, as there are twice as many t-shirts

    9x +14y = 256

    Ending up with:

    x=2y

    9x + 14y = 256

    Substitute "2x" for "y" in the lower equation

    9(2y) + 14y = 256

    18y + 14y = 256

    32y = 256

    y= 8

    Plug 8 into original equation

    x = 2(8)

    x = 16

    16 t-shirts and 8 shorts.

  2. 16 T-shirts

    8 shorts

    hope I helped:

    16 x 9 = 144

    8 x 14 = 112

    = $256

  3. First set up a system of equations:

    t = 2s  --- You get this from the first sentence, since there are twice as many t-shirts, you have to double the shorts in order to make these amounts equal

    9t +14s = 256 --- Pretty self explanatory...

    Ending up with:

    t = 2s

    9t + 14s = 256

    Substitute "2s" for "t" in the lower equation

    9(2s) + 14s = 256

    18s + 14s = 256

    32s = 256

    s= 8

    Plug 8 back into either original equation

    t = 2(8)

    t = 16

    16 t-shirts and 8 shorts.
