  1. get him the sky caddie sg5 it's the newest model and its very good he will like it very much.

  2. When these first came out, I thought they were a little gimmicky, but I played a couple of weeks ago and my playing partner had a skycaddie - all I can say is wow!  I've priced them out and they range in price from the 200's up to the 600's, but it makes a ton of difference.

You don't need anything that goes up to 1200 yards - no golf hole is that long.  Skycaddie gives you distance to front, center, and back of green, as well as distances to hazards and how far to clear hazards in play.  I'm not sure if there is a service fee for the service - I don't think there is, but you might check into it.

  3. Check out the SkyCaddie.  It is a GPS system that is by far the best rangefinder out there.  I dont think its that expensive, but there may ba a monthly service charge or something like that.

  4. anything bushnell is very good sky caddie is also good but a little expensive

  5. I think a bushnell lazer one is the best option. You don't need to go 1200 yards.

They are simple and give you the exact yardage to a pin no mater where it is on the green.

  6. Just get him a SkyCaddie.  It's basically a GPS for golf.  There are different models from the SG2.1 up to the SG5.

The SG2.5 is very small which is easy to carry but I found the screen to be a little too small.

The SG3 has a bigger screen than the SG2.5 which is much easier to read.  The only downside is that they use regular AA batteries.  This might have it's advantages and disadvantages.

I went with the SG4 at first which is the same as the SG3 but with a rechargable battery.  But the thing I didn't like about it was that it has a proprietary cable which is awkward to connect and if you lose it you're screwed, you have to order it from skycaddie and who knows how much that will cost.

I sold my SG4 and bought the SG5 which is the same as the SG4 but has a color screen.  I loved it because I was able to tell what were lakes and what were bunkers quicker than the SG4  because it was in color.  It also uses a standard USB A to mini B cable which is the same cable most digital cameras use so if I lost the cable it's easy to replace.  And to my amazement the SG5 started up much faster, I didn't have to wait long for it to connect to the satelites, the SG4 took about 5 to 10 minutes sometimes.

  8. I think iGolf is definitely the way to go!  You can map any course yourself.  You don't have to pay for service, download courses, etc.  You can pick one up on ebay for $150.
