Question:

Please help! Incredible foot pain?

I have had foot pain so bad since I started skating again 2 weeks ago.

It hardly hurts in the morning but then I go to gym and it hurts for the rest of the day. It is usually all around on the top of both my feet, but I took 2 ibuprofen and the pain is only on the inside of my left foot now.

A while ago my doctor said I have flat feet, and I am going to a podiatrist in 2 weeks.

What should I do till' then?

  1. I've had flat feet all my life, but I've never had problems like you describe.

Are you diabetic?  If so, don't wait to see the podiatrist - go see a doctor now.  Diabetics often have problems with circulation in their feet - get them looked at now.

Otherwise...  Maybe you pinched a nerve or something from trying to shove your feet into the skates?  I know I've had problems with ski boots, which are supposed to be really tight...and is one reason I don't like skiing very much.

Do your feet look swollen at all?  If so, try elevating them, and putting an ice pack on them for 5-10 minutes every few hours.  Frozen peas work well - they're cheap, conform to your foot, don't get TOO cold, refreeze quickly, and are non-toxic (I'd say "tasty" but personally, I hate peas unless served as a soup :-)  )

If you're in pain, that usually means something is wrong - don't ignore your body.  Get a doctor to look you over.

  2. If the pain is really bad - for example, you can't walk - try to see the podiatrist earlier.

  3. Go get a pedicure! I'm sure it'll help your feet.

  4. Try not to exersice too much until you go to a podiatrist.
