Question:

Please help!!! My cat is breathing heavily and made choking sounds?

I'm so worried about him. He's lying down on my bed right now, and seems normal, but he was acting really strange a while ago!

He came into my room when I was sleeping, and I heard a choking coughing sound from him. It freaked me out so much. I also notice that he was breathing heavily, like panting, with his mouth closed.

A few days ago I noticed that there was a reddish pinkish blob on my carpet. I think he might of coughed out some of his wet food, but I'm not completely sure.

Please help me! I love my cat sooo soo much, and this is really freaking me out :\ He's a 4 y/o orange/white male cat that I got from the shelter 3 months ago.

  1. I'm no expert, but my intuition says it's probably something not too serious.  If you got him from a shelter and have no medical records, the best thing you can do for him is to take him to the vet and have him get his routine check-ups and immunization shots (I know you said not to mention vets but this still seems to be the most logical answer to me).  Once you get all that done I'm confident everything will be fine and you'll have a nice healthy kitty for years to come.

  2. cats eat a lot of their hair. If he sicked up some food and he is fine now don't worry about it. If he is making heaving sounds he might have a fur ball. as long as he is breathing he is fine.

ask your parents tomorrow to get him some anti furball treats. Cats like them and they disolve all the hair in their tummy from grooming.

  3. My concern is this "a reddish pinkish blob" - was the food reddish pink? I'd assume not and I'd be concerned that was blood. In the morning I'd really take the cat to the vet, even just for peace of mind. When cats cough up hairballs you can easily tell because they'll be a clump of their fur in the vomit. But sometimes they'll have a little spew while they're trying to cough up the hairball. Good luck and try to get some sleep.

  4. don't worry - that freaked me out when my cat did that too!  it's really normal, he just has a hairball.  he probably did spit up his food before too, which is normal.  try giving him some butter, i bet he'll love it, and it will coat his throat to help with the hairballs.  for the future, either buy a food for cats that get hairballs, or just give him about 1/2 tablespoon of butter once a week.  a raw egg 1-2 times a month is also good for his coat!

i know it freaks you out when they do that - but it really is normal and he will be ok! :-)

  5. WAKE YOUR PARENTS UP!!!! but its probably not that bad.  he might have eaten too much, or eaten something laying around the house.

  6. Hairball or he could have been choking, but obviously he spit it up already, so he'll be fine, i also had an orange and white cat, my first pet was a grey cat with no tail but after having him since i was a small child he died 3 years ago from cancer. During his last few weeks my friend moved to boston leaving behind his orange and white cat named tito sanchez, so i took him in right before my grey cat had died. he was old(15) and it was understandable but still sad, so after about 3 years of owning the orange and white cat he got hit by a car in april. I was devastated. But i moved on and got a new kitten last month. hes 2 months old and his name is Chandler, although i still look for tito sanchez sometimes when i wake up and i miss hi a lot.

  7. As some of the other posters mentioned, it does sound like hairballs. One effective but gross solution is to allow the cat to eat some grass. The grass blades wrap themselves around the hairballs and make the cat throw up because they can't digest the grass. That's why cats will often munch on grass if they are outside. They're doing it to try to get rid of hairballs.

  8. It could be just hairballs.

Watch him for another day or so.

I know you said not to say to take him to the vet.

You don't have to tonight, but as soon as you can, do it.

It sounds kinda like what my kitty got and he died in three days before I could even take him to the vet.

If you really want to make sure everything is ok with your kitty, take him to the vet as soon as you can.

The county humane society should be the cheapest.

  9. Lol, sweetie, that is what cat's do.

They eat, drink, c**p, plot to take over the world, l**k themselves and throw up hairballs.  Don't worry about it!  I've had my cat for about eight years now, and he does that about once a month.  So long as he's not throwing up everyday, it's not really anything to worry about.  And if it does get to the point where he's throwing up quite often, MeowMix makes a great hairball control cat chow.

  10. Could be a hair ball caught in his throat. You can buy  stuff for cats hair balls at the store. They get them from l*****g on their fur, and the hair gets stuck in their stomach or throat.  Just check out the pet section at the store it comes in a tube like tooth paste. And cats love the taste of it to.

  11. He has a fur ball. give him some margarine to l**k maybe a half a teaspoon full for now and some tall grass to nibble on. then get him some fur ball remedy at the store. and give him some one a week. he will be fine.
