My goat is very sick... and my parents are gone so i cant take him to the vet :(

He is a Nubian goat, around 4 years old, and is at a healthy weight. He is NOT bloated, and has a very good diet and we give him corn everyonce in a while. We have running water in the pasture for them, shade trees, but it is rather hot out... around 90 degrees or more.

I need to know what he has, and how to treat it, his symtoms are the following:

Twitching/jerking whenever we are near him (this is very odd because he is so tame, he's never done this before)

He is holding his head up very high

he is foaming at the mouth

he has a very sad look on his face, looks very worried/in pain

walks like a robot

and appears to be holding his ears up higher than normal.

what should i do? I need help :( He is one of my favorite pets! please!

  1. ok

  2. Get him cooled down. He should be alright. Just run the hose over him for a little while and he should calm down.

  3. awww

i would contact your parents and then get someone you know to take him to the vet with you

give it lots of water aand try to cool it off

maybe spray it with a hose

  4. In the first place get off line and call a vet. NOW. Yellow pages Veterinary. They have house calls.

  5. He has rabies if he's foaming from the mouth.  He is holding his head high because he can't breathe, go to a vet.

  6. Just because he's foaming at the mouth, doesn't mean he has rabies.  I had a doe who would occasionally foam at the mouth, and she was perfectly normal.  A couple of questions.....is he still eating?  Is he getting up and down ok?  Have you tried to take his temp?

I would call the vet, and see if they can give you some advice over the phone.  Before you call, get his temp, respiration rate and look at his f***s to see if it looks normal (they may ask you these things).  Make sure he has plenty of water and see if he's eating ok.  Good luck.  I love my goats, and get so upset when one gets sick.

UPDATE*****Is he up-to-date on his CD&T vaccine?  Based on the signs you're describing, it sounds like it might be tetanus.  If so, you need some anti-toxin ASAP.

UPDATE 2: How's the goat doing?  FYI, you take the temperature rectally.  You can use a digital thermometer.  Normal temp is 101.5-103 F.

  7. I am so sorry. If he is twitching at people, and foaming at the mouth, he has rabies, and he needs to be put down.

  8. try calling the vet i hope everything works out hun take care

  9. Is he vaccinated against rabies?, don't fear the worst until a vet has examined him. Call your parents and get them to come back asap. If money is the issue with regards to the vet get your parents to give them their credit card details via phone or explain the situation to the vet and I'm sure they Will understand and wait for payment once your parents return.

Please phone a vet though your goat seems very distressed.

I hope that he is okay.

  10. Sounds like rabies too me too.  Please call a vet.  Maybe they can come to you  . .. you don't want to mess around with rabies because is can be fatal to you if you get it . . . .Call a vet NOW!!!!!
