I am planning a trip to the Carribean and I do not enjoy sitting around a pool all day with a coconut filled fruity cocktail. I like mountains, hiking, caving, snokelling, surfing, etc. I also am looking for an island where it's safe to go off (with my bf) without a tour guide for hikes and exploring. We like adventure and not to keen on sitting on a beach for a week straight. Please help me choose an island that's right for us!!!!

  1. PUERTO RICO definitely! They have beaches, mountains, forests, including El Yunque Rain forest & Guanica dry forest, waterfalls, Camuy Caves, Bioluminescent Bay, Arecbo Telescope, Surfing, Snorkelling, Biking, etc. You will never get bored there. Its amazing! Plus there is San Juan, a beautiful Old city with historic sights & shopping, nightlife & more. This video will speak for itself:

PS- also PR is a commonwealth of the US. No passport required. You dont have to worry about wierd diseases. No extra shots to get & the water & food is safe to consume :)

  2. Dominican Republic is the best place to go.Trust me i go every year and its awesome!!!!

  3. When you say adventure, they places that really come to mind are Central America.  Costa Rica has got great eco-friendly travel options.  You can visit Waterfall gardens, the active Arenal Volcano with the hot springs, do canopy tours, whitewater rafting on class 3-5 rapids, horseback riding, ATV Tours, etc...In the Guancaste area you have beaches and if you are a surfer, take a trip to Witches Rock.  You can also go down to the Manuel Antonio area for some great rainforest hikes.  The other area that is grea for the adventurous is Belize.  Fly into Belize City and take the Tropic Air flight to Ambergris Caye.  This is a great island, laid back, fun, great for diving and snorkeling.  Then head up to the Cayo District for horseback riding, cave tubing, and archeological ruins.  Check out these properties...tabacon.com, paradisus playa conchal, si como no, Ramons Village, and Blancaneaux Lodge.  I've been in the industry for over 13 years and am happy to help with your planning.  kirstinc@gotravelorlando.com

  4. Cuba

The largest island and incredibly diverse. And(if you are American),since it is illegal to go there. every minute is an adventure!

  5. Why don't you take a Caribbean cruise. That way you can choose from the many excursions that they offer on a variety of islands.

It's a great way to travel and see and try new things.

All of the things you mentioned are available on most cruises.

We like Royal Caribbean the best.

  6. Dominican Republic.

  7. The island of Dominica(not to be mistaken with the spanish speaking island of Dominican Republic)

    WE got:

    *ziplining

    *River Canyoing

    *River Tubing

    *kayaking

p.s the main island where pirated of the Caribbean 2&3 were filmed

Alex Boylan in (around the world for free) was here as well

  8. if i was u i would pick the dominican republic.u can do anything there...fro sitting by a resort to hiking or going snorkeling

  9. Curacao

we went 4 wheeling up on cliffs that the ocean sprays up on, explored caves..

we went on a huge olden time sailing ship to a deserted island with coral and beautiful fish.. (the Insuide sailing ship)

    went scuba diving

not dirty,..not dangerous. good islanders. dutch owned. (next to bonaire and aruba.)

Also Guadelope. (french speaking country, as is st barths) and has rainforests. All the sailing, snorkeling and scuba. Has and island that is a national park and you can see Iguannas and such.

Americans do not really know about it yet and so it's always nice to not have some fellow american on a tour thowing their trash out the window and having to say sorry for them.

Dominican rep. in my opinion wasn't all that safe yet. We went in Feb. 2007. Lot of back alley type of stuff like jamaica has. They have whale mating season the from jan to like april so that's why we went but for example...they try and over charge and pull crazy fees out of their hats when you take a boat ride for the whale watching.

Things never discussed in brochure.. a tax to view whales,..gas fee,..crazy stuff.

We got off and went to another boat. No prob. Plus we went snorkeling and there was soooooo much garbage in Samana waters it wasn't worth getting my fins on!
