I have an essay question- All musicians rely on the media (eg. radio, TV, magazines) for their coninuing fame and success and the media in turn rely on these people for their profits.

I'm choosing to agree with this statement but I can't think of a person or band who I could refer to to support my view and some major points I could prove it with. Thankyou so much for your help- I really, really appreciate it!

  1. Britney Spears

as they say "No publicity is bad publicity"

    _

  2. Brittany Spears going on that TV show a few weeks back. Talk about a PR move. She looked good and the show (I can't remember its name) got its highest ratings EVER.

  3. You could pick any band and you could talk about how they complain about tabloids hounding them but they still treat the paparazzi with respect at movie premieres, awards shows etc. because they need them to maintain their fame.

You could also talk about publicity stunts, and the role the media plays in keeping them going, etc.

  4. im aussie too, what about the likes of Deltra Goodrem, Kylie Minogue, Jessy MCartney ect. who used TV soaps to become known, before starting a professional music career. Also the radio (hot 30 countdown for ex) and tv (video hits. for ex), by getting on air and talking about your music career and letting the world listen to your music can get it out there and downloaded, then onto people ipods, then onto their myspaces, and then myspace becomes a media for other friends to hear. So getting it to one person can pass it onto the world.

  5. The difficulty is... Your statement could be true or false, depending on the band and the genre. Pop is heavily commercial and relies on that commercial success to keep its momentum going. Take a look at Michael Jackson, Britney Spears and the latest to hit the news, the New Kids on the Block. In the cases of Michael and Britney, their sales and popularity have been directly related to what is going on in their lives that is reported by the media. And the New Kids on the Block have just done a press release about a possible reunion, but if they don't get the positive press, it will fail.

On the other hand, there are massive amounts of musicians and bands from other genres like Rock and Roll, Heavy Metal, Goth Metal, Blues, Jazz, Trance etc, that don't rely quite so heavily on the media attention, and aren't affected as badly as a pop star would be by negative attention, or as good by positive attention. Take Metallica for example. There were a lot of people who stopped listening to their music because of the Napster file sharing incident, and there were also some who started listening to them because of that (those who had never heard of them previously) but You don't often see their faces on the mainstream news or news papers. Even after they have stopped playing metal exclusively and started exploring their art, they are still widely popular. The reason is, these other genres are not as media driven as those in the Pop genre... They rely more on word of mouth and hearing something at a friends house or getting together just to listen to some tunes... The biggest music help these bands get is the radio, but even so, there are too many people who don't listen to the radio or don't pay attention to it and just have it for background noise to attribute too large a piece of their popularity to media exposure or positive opinion of the media...

  6. American Idol. Any artist associated with the show is bound to some sort of american idol contract. After being on tv and being exposed they are then reliant on radio, magazines, videos, merchandising, and live performance like any other artist. American idol is completely dependant on these people for its success.
