Forget the hostel.  The best way to experience Portugal is by COUCH SURFING!  It's an awesome way to stay safe, meet new people, stay cheap if not free, and have a look at the culture from the inside out!  You simply must check out this site and read about it.  You see, when you register on it, you have access to thousands of couches that are available across the world.  You contact the individual who has the couch (or bed) available and make arrangements.  Stick with those who have a high rating of happy visitors.  Oh, and if you want, you and put your own couch up and maybe meet some visitors of your own.  Hope this helps!  Good luck and enjoy your visit!
