  1. Check with your cell phone company. Almost all companies have roaming agreements in other countries.

However it may be much more expensive to make and receive calls. If she calls you the cost will be on her bill. If you call her you will pay the standard mobile phone cost and she will pay extra to receive the call.

Texts also have an increased cost. when used internationally.

If she is going for any length of time it may be cheaper or her to buy a pre-pay card in France (if her phone is not locked) and have you phone her (check on the internet for cheaper rates).

  2. It depends on the type of phone she has and who her service provider is.  If she has a tri-band phone, (GSM needed), and her service provider has roaming agreements with French providers, then she should be able to call.  I have a RAZR from T-Mobile, and I have no trouble making calls from Paris to other phone numbers in France or in the US.  It is expensive though -- something like $1.10 a minute for her -- so keep your phone calls brief.

She'll need to take a plug adapter with her so that she can charge her phone's battery.  I bought mine at Brookstone, but I'm sure there are other places that sell them.  She shouldn't need a voltage converter because the charger for her phone should take care of that.

If she needs to make lengthier calls, she should get a phone card from any Tabac and use it to call you from a pay phone or the phone in her room.

Have you guys thought of using Skype?  Free international calls from one computer to another.

  3. she can take her phone and ring you.

If you are in the UK with a British phone, you won't be charged when she texts you or when she rings.

If you want to text her, you will be charged the normal price for a text (exactly as if she was in the UK), as you'll be texting a British phone with your British phone.

  4. Well, first off, she needs to check with the store she bought her cell phone from and see if it runs on the same band as they have in Europe (most cells these days do). The she needs to contact her cell phone provider and take out a temporary international plan. This only takes a few minutes and will significantly lower costs. As for it charging you anything, that depends on your cell phone provider and the plan you have. Just call cingular/verizon/etc and ask them to be sure.
