We have a bluebird that has been flying around our backyard for years. I noticed a nest in the oak tree recently and today I think one of the babies may have fallen.

The baby seems young, he is flopping around the back deck and trying to fly. The mother has been flying around the baby trying to protect it. I think the baby is too young yet because it cant get more than a couple feet in the air. It keeps trying but no luck.

It has now positioned itself in a small bush and is sitting still? I dont know what to do.

  1. leave it alone, if you touch it the mother will reject it and it will die

  2. get a special formula for baby birds!

  3. LEAVE IT ALONE!! Young birds explore, young birds fall out of nests, it happens. If it can get a couple feet in the air, then it should be flying fine in a couple days. The mother bird will continue to care for it, she knows where it is, it will be fine.

I hate it when people find babybirds on the ground and "rescue" them. This is doing nothing more then condeming them to death. Mother birds will still care for the baby if it is on the groung, don't worry

  4. Don't do ANYTHING.  Leave the bird alone, and put a piece of tape with a sign across any access to the back yard telling people to KEEP OUT until further notice.  Watch through the window ... the baby bird may die, but with the mother right there and the baby in a bush, the mother will just bring food to it and will take care of it ... this is the BEST chance for the survival of this baby.  NEVER touch a baby bird, since many parents will totally reject them if they smell like people ... just give mom the room to care for her baby ... and take the kids to the park and even eat out to keep them from bothering the mother bird!

  5. If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly. You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it. If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest. Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched. If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival. Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own. Look for a rehab here:

  6. This is normal behavior with a lot of the thrushes (a bluebird is a thrush).  The young often leave the nest before they are fully fledged and the parents will feed and watch them even though they're not in the nest.  It's actually often better for the young to leave early like this, because the noise they make en masse often draws in predators.  This way, they're scattered a bit and if one is taken the others have a better chance of survival.

Welcome to evolution in action.  :-)

  7. what i would do is to go to a local pet store and buy already made food for baby birds. Then put on some ruber gloves and go get the baby carefully and try to fed it, if you want!

    i hope this helps!

  8. Pick it up and put it back in the nest, preferably when mom is out getting food.

It is a myth that parents reject a baby once it has been touched by humans, birds have almost NO sense of smell, way less then us.

Speaking from experience the baby will NOT be rejected.

  9. If you touch it, even to put it in the nest, the mama bird will probably abandon it.  I think I'd probably give it a shot, though, unless it's too high.  Maybe take it in yourself?

  10. Leave it alone. Best not to upset the Mom.

  11. if the bird can't fly alone you should look up your nearest wildlife bird rescue center.  they are out there believe me.  and the people who are saying that a mother will abandon a baby that's touched by a human don't have a clue what they are talking about.  it's completely false, basically an old wives tale.  too bad people are giving advice when they don't have any basis for it:(
