  1. In Calgary itself their are coyotes, deer, wolves, birds of course.  Moose and bear once in while wander in.

We are close to the mountains so we see a lot of mountain goats, mountain sheep, bears, wolves, coyotes, elk.

  2. I haven't lived there for 10 years but we used to get the occasional black bear and quite a few deer. The bears always made the news; the deer seldom. Ah! Celebrity!  The deer were often seen in the wee hours of the night on the median of the #2 highway   which goes north to Edmonton and is very busy during the day. I have also seen them  on 16th Avenue which is part of the #1. Again, it was late at night and the place they seemed to get stuck at was the median just east of the RCMP building where it widens as you approach the entrance to the #2.

Skunks by the dozen are easy to see late at night in the far south regions like Deer Run.

They have built up an area east of the Barlow Trail and north of Memorial Drive (or maybe it was 16th - don't remember) but before they did a deer and a coyote used to live in there and I think they were friends. Someone wrote a couple of stories about them for the newspapers and I remember it was on CTV news when the Wildlife People were trying to catch them and relocate them.

We used to call the Barlow Trail The Bunny Trail because there were so many rabbits on it up near the airport.

Prairie dogs had huge communities near one of the NE. LRT stops at 19th Street.

Canadian Geese are everywhere and one of their favourite spots is near the Bow River in West Hillhurst and Parkdale. They pretty much act like they own that strip of real estate.

Probably the best source for wildlife sightings in Calgary would be a night shift cab driver. That's how I got to see so many - I drove taxi at night while I went to school.

  3. It is rare to see any significant wildlife within Calgary the city itself, other than the usual squirrels, chipmunks, skunks, racoons, or various birds. You may see the odd fox.

However, if you take a drive from Calgary to Banff, you might see some prairie dogs or elk, and perhaps even wolves or black bears. It all depends on what time you are travelling and how hungry the animals are.

  4. Wildlife in Calgary?  Calgary is a metropolitan city of over a million people.  I suppose it has the same wildlife as any other big city - mice, squirrels, some deer in the river valley, etc.
