Please help - major advice needed!?

Question

We were talking to our 63 year old grandmother. We were just talking about treasure maps and my nan just told me that when she first moved into the house in 1978 she found some old tattered papers behind the sink that read, this way is... and showed a very dull arrow. She thought nothing of it and threw it all away. We started the conversation because in a bedroom there is a metal bo in the wall with a key hole in a square shape. It is not that big and it has never been opened as there is no key. The house was built in 1957.

What does this mean the clues behind the sink, the hole in wall?
