  1. It's a good piece if equipment. It is older than the models that they push now but it still works. When you buy this gear you also have to pay for a subscription to the service. It costs about $50 per year. Here's a link http://www.skygolfgps.com/SG_Membership_...

If you play in two states you have to go to the middle plan. Take for instace, me. I live in SE Pennsylvania, so I golf in PA and I also golf in southern New Jersey and Delaware and Maryland and in October, Vermont. So if you don't do that you have the low plan. But it's an annual membership so it's no big deal. Some other GPS systems make you pay for each course you download individually. But this is a good deal, I would buy it.

  2. All of these aids available to the golfers are as much a hinderance as they are help. No golfer is  worth his salt if he cannot eyeball an approximate distance from his ball to the flag, a hazard, a lay-up position, a green or a curve of a log-leg. This is a part of the game which separates the men from the boys. How does one adjust for inclement weather, wind gusts, etc. with GPS?

  3. If you have a GPS enabled SmartPhone (Blackberry, Treo, etc.) then forget the stand alone GPS.  You can download GPS golf aps for free, or up to 50/yr subscriptions and not have to worry about recharging, having the right course, etc.  This way you can be ready when the moment arrives, and less 'planning' is needed.

With all due respect to googie...

The human eye system is extremely poor at accurately judging distances beyond about 50 yards (the distance which we originally could throw a stone accurately when we were running around before the invention of golf.)  Additionally, golf course architects do everything in their power to PREVENT us from making accurate visual measurements.  They place large trees in front of smaller ones, smaller ones in front of larger ones, slope greens opposite of the terrain, hide bunkers, streams and all sorts of hazards from our view.  They also entice us to try for the heroic shot and make the safe route looks more difficult.

Golf is a difficult game to master and proper course management is essential.  Pros use the assistance of a caddy who has STUDIED the course in addition to their own practice round(s), pre-tournament pro-am rounds, etc.

A good GPS in the hands of someone who knows how to play the game makes for a good round.  A good GPS in the hands of someone who recognizes their own limitations will at minimum allow that person to make good course management decisions.  This should result in fewer shots because they will chose the right club for the distances they need to hit.  The GPS won't hit the ball clean for you, BUT it will let you know when to pull out the 5 iron, and not the 7.
