Okay so I got bit by a squirrel today, the cut still hurts, they are just minor scratches. My dad says I will be fine and that there is nothing to worry about. I need to know if I have any disease but problem is I don't have the squirrel, I got bit and he ran away. So now Im freaking out on what to do. I keep on reading here what can happen if you get bit by a squirrel. My Mom and Dad keep on telling me I don't need to worry and that I don't need to go to the doctor which I do need to go and that pisses me off. I've had a runny nose and been under the weather since the day before yesterday and yesterday. So I don't really know if I have any symptoms because of the bite. When I got bit my finger swelled up because I was clutching it hard with a wet nap and it became pruney like how your feet are when you've been in the bath tub for a lot. The cut burns and it hurts if I touch it.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. I SERIOUSLY AM WORRIED OUT OF MY MIND. I DON'T HAVE THE d**n SQUIRREL. BUT I SERIOUSLY NEED TO KNOW IF IM OKAY OR NOT BUT HOW!?!?!

PLEASE HELP ME!!

  1. First of all, continuing to ask the same question multiple times will not get you better answers.

Second, you need to have a doctor look at it - even without the risk of rabies, there is still a high risk of more conventional infections.  In western states, squirrels can also carry bubonic plague.  (No, that is not a joke.)

Third, bites by wildlife should be reported to the local health department anyway.

  2. Tell Your Parents That If They Love You Then To Take You To The Doctor Just To Be Safe.  There Is No Saying FerSure That You Will Get Rabies, But You Shoud Totally Check With The Doctor ASAP!  Have You Ever Seen Old Yeller And What Happened To Him? ... :-/

  3. go to the doctors

  4. Ok, really - how old are you?  You need to go to the dr.  Do you have to depend on your parents to take you or something??

My husband got bit by a rat that was in our dogs mouth - his middle finger very had a very small cut - and I sent him to ER just to make sure he wasn't going to end up with some funky disease.  You definitely need a tetnus shot.  Squirrels carry diseases just like any other rodent!!

  5. wow , u have to go to the doctor and fast cuz you could die the squirrel could had have rabies and if he scratch you or bit you , now you could have it and if you dont treat rabies in less than 3 days you could die

  6. Squirrels CAN carry rabies, so I would highly suggest you go to the doctors. At the very least go to get it properly cleaned to prevent a nasty infection that could result. For now, dose it with peroxide unless its a puncture wound.

  7. You really don't have anything to worry about. It is rare that anybody gets anything when bitten by a squirrel. Keep the area clean and keep an eye on it for signs of infection (pus and redness).

  8. i would get checked out by a doctor

  9. your fine, a squirrel scratched my friend and she was fine, just put hydrogen peroxide and a band aid

  10. CALM DOWN AND STOP OVER REACTING ALREADY!!!! If your parents wont take you oh well there isn't anything you can do so just get on with ya life. By the way a runny nose and under the weather were before you got bit and arent symptoms of anything but the common cold :P

It is unlikely that a squirrel will bite a human hard or deep enough to require stiches, but infections are always a risk. Those bitten should wash the wound site and surrounding area with soap and water. It is acceptable but not necessary to further clean the wound with an antiseptic agent such as isopropyl alcohol or diluted hydrogen peroxide. Deep wounds should always be examined and cared for by an appropriate medical personnel.

Tetnus shots are important for such bites. The recommendation is to get a tetnus injection or a booster shot within twenty-four hours of the biting incident if the person bitten has not had such a booster within the previous five years. Rabies may be carried by squirrels, but this is rare.

  11. First of all, how did a squirrel bite you? Was he acting crazy or something? He may have rabies, you need to go to a doctor.
