Okay, I live in a REALLY BIG town. The schools here are not really good. (Gangs, violence, very low scoring students, etc.)

The high school especially, I will be going there next year. I think.

There is one private high school in the area. Pinewood Prep.

It's $10,000 a year for high-school. My parents can't afford that. But my grandfather can, I was going to ask or possibly beg him to pay for me to go there. I hate the public High School, there are about 923659586976 kids there! (exaggeration!)

I hate the place. I really don't want to go!

I am really smart. Not to brag!

The public high school curriculum is not very challenging. Not at all challenging actually.

Pinewood is supposed to be really great! You can't get a scholarship to go there, I'm pretty sure.

What should I do?

Thanks so much!

  1. First off, I went to a private school. I'm only telling you this so that you know where I'm coming from.

At the end of it, my mother worked out how much she would have spent for me on a wardrobe each year, and it worked out to be roughly the equivalent of the tuition at the time. Now, that was the 1970's in Canada and there will be differences but, realistically, how much do you spend on clothes each year? Having a uniform, and some casual clothes for weekends, makes a huge difference to the budget.

Almost every private school has scholarships. Mine did -- for almost every grade from 7 on up. Write to them now and ask them because the exams for scholarships are generally held in January or February for the following September. You may need to get letters of recommendation from some of your teachers, too. (This is something that a lot of U.S. schools seem to do, according to my American cousins.)

Now for what I consider the important part: education is what you make of it. You've probably heard that so many times, it's making you sick.

If what is important to you is to get a *good* education, you can do it anywhere -- even at home. Education is about learning to think critically and apply the basic knowledge you've gained.

You don't need to get it from a prestigious school. I won't say that it isn't nice to go to a well-known school, because it is. But whether or not you enjoy it is another matter entirely. Remember, many students there will have a *lot* more money than you will.

At most private schools (that I've seen), the kids who came from 'old money' had to get part time jobs and earn their way, just like the kids from the middle income families. It's the 'new money' people who tend to buy their spoiled kids a new car for the 16th birthday -- and snide remarks from the 'nouveau riche' can hurt.

The education will come to you if you work at it, no matter where you go to school. If you go to the local school, I can assure you -- the teachers will be *thrilled* to have a student who is bright and wants to learn.
