Please help me! Hit and Run: 16 years old.?

Question

Hi, I was at a parking lot mall and i accidentally hit another person's car and made a dent. At the time i didn't know it, there were a few cars and Im not sure if there was a camera there or not. THis happened yesterday. If they figure my license plate out, what is going to happen to me? This is in california. Will i go to jail? how much do i have to pay? I didn't know that i made a dent...I'm 16 and i got my license a couple of weeks ago! I AM FREAKING OUT! I'm so sorry !!

You say you know you hit a car but you didn't know you caused a dent ?  Yeah right !  Do the right thing, ease your conscience.  Go back and find the other car, call them and explain that you are willing to pay to fix their car.

If no one saw you, then you got lucky.  BUT, I think your conscience is going to get to you.  Do what is right.  Good luck.

That sucks!  I did the same thing.  Come clean and ask the store owner/manager if anyone reported damage.  You will feel SO much better.  Your wallet will hurt  a little, but not as much as your conscience if you don't at least try to remedy the situation.

bless your heart!!!!  first off quit freaking out.  I promise this will work out okay.  It's an accident.  you should have left a note but didn't.

First tell your parents.  they'll be mad but then they'll be happy that you told them the truth.  then go up to the mall and see if a report has been filed.  if not make a report so there is a record with the mall.

I'm a big time worrier and this is not something to worry about.  I have a 16 year old son myself and would hope that he would tell me this and i would have presence of mind not to come unglues.  it also doesn't hurt that I'm a claims adjuster by trade so he really doesn't stand a  chance.

you won't go to jail if you fess up and talk to the mall people about it and say what happened and if you ask for the security people to check their cameras for the other ppl's licensce plate and find them or just tell the security people your number just in case so the car you hit can call if they ask.

you probably wont go to jail anyways, but yeah idk, ask your parents.

and don't feel too bad about it. this stuff happens a lot. like one time i wasn't paying attention and braked really hard cause the car in front of me stopped and a couple cars behind me got in a small wreck but i was freaking out bc i thought it was all my fault but really its okay, i was told that they have to pay more attention too and i got lucky just move on and live and learn you'll be okay.

If someone has a good description of your vehicle and got a partial on the license plate insurance companies can search for partial tags and find the owner(s) of the vehicle. If they do find that out they can file a claim against your insurance policy and they can, and probably will, pay for the damages and in return your policy premiums could go up or your insurance company could cancel your policy.
