I have a RadioShack Wireless telephone as my home phone. I noticed the batteries in the phone are so weak and I Should replace them, But I am not able to find the correct one.It says on the batteries like this:-

NICKEL METAL HYDRIDE

RECHARGEABLE BATTERY

DC 3.6V 800mAh

I don't quite understand the meaning of 800mAh. In a shop I saw a battery with 650mAh.Will it work with this phone?

  1. Nah that doesn't mean anything... well it does but it will not help with the battery you need. If you take the handset to radio shack they will know the battery you need. there should be a number on the battery and the handset starting with 43......... if you find it on the battery that is the model # for the battery and same if you find it on the phone. you can go on radio shack website and type in the model number for your battery or phone. The battery usually cost about 14 to 20 dollars. Hope that help.

As for the mAh all that means more mAh the longer the battery will last.

  2. I don't know a whole lot about batteries, but I will give you a link so you can contact a battery professional directly online and have them answer your question. They're very professional and helpful.

  3. The information is insufficient to find the correct battery. Visit RadioShack (and go with your phone and battery) and have them do the work for you. Other electronics stores will also be able to assist with a compatible battery.

The mAh is a rating of capacity. It is best to find an identical (or very close) rating as your phone is designed to use on or the other. But don't worry if it's different. Battery type, size, connectors, and voltage are more important.

I do see that is a Nickel Metal Hydride (AKA NIMH) battery. Be careful the new one says NIMH and not NICD. Using the incorrect battery type can cause a fire and/or explosion (Bad!!!)

I am slightly concerned over your battery replacement. How old is the telephone? How heavily is it used? NIMH batteries typically last 4-5 years or longer in cordless phones under normal use. Typically speaking, the battery life cycle for NiMH is about the same as a life cycle of a cordless phone.

If your battery fails prematurely, the phone may have a poorly designed charging cycle. Then you should consider the cost of battery replacement versus phone replacement. Typically replacement NiMH batteries will cost $20-$45. It may be more economical to replace the phone for a better one. (FYI, I'm from Canada and RadioShack products here are abysmal).

If you do find a new phone, consider Panasonic DECT 6.0. A bit pricier, but excellent reliability, good charging system that doesn't over charge, and $12 replacement batteries (sold at drug and grocery stores). Ask a good electronics retailer for more information. A good one will explain the features and the importance of the type of replacement batteries it uses.
