  1. We had a compost demo area at the community garden where I garden. Since no one else wanted the job, I became the compost god father and operated all the composters for 1 year. The one that worked the best by far was simply cinder blocks stacked in a horse shoe shape area. There were spaces left between the blocks. To prevent odors only use plant materials. No meat scraps. You will also need to turn the material at least once a week or so.

I've seen red and gray cinder blocks for sell so you can show your artistist inclinations when you design your own composter.

  2. Cheapest thing is a pile on the ground. Easy to get to any side to turn if you want. Just use plant debris, leaves, grass clippings. Skip the food stuff. makes it trashy. Definitely no meat scraps unless you want to increase your rodent population. Plant an Abelia grandiflora (Glossy Abelia) in front of it to hide it. Also blooms all summer with fragrant flowers so it will smell nice.  But the plant debris doesn't smell bad anyways.
