Does anyone know of a fictional novel (preferably not too obscure) that features a female protagonist that faces sexism?

I have to write an essay about this and I'm struggling to find any material.

  1. If you're not adverse to science fiction, then you can try The Honor of the Queen, which is the second book in the Honor Harrington series written by David Weber. In this book, Honor Harrington, the captain of a Royal Manticoran naval ship goes to the aid of the planet Grayson, where women have few rights. Grayson is attacked by their enemy, which treats women even worse. In the course of her duties, Honor saves the sovereign of Grayson from assassination and is awarded the highest honors on Grayson, much to the chagrin of the Steadholders (all male) of Grayson.

This book, as well as several others in the series (Flag in Exile), deal with the issue that you describe as well as other viewpoints and societal changes on Grayson.

  2. Well, books like Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Bronte's Jane Eyre certainly feature sexist Victorian representations of women. Not that they oppose it terribly...

  3. The Second s*x by Simone de Beauvoir .
