So does it have to be the result of a bacterium or virus?

If not, has she considered malaria? It's the 3rd most common killer in the world, and occurs as a result of protozoans using the tsetse fly as a vector.

Or there's always the common cold, which is based on a virus and I doubt any one can reasonably claim is uncommon.

There's also syphilis, which is based on a bacterium. But I don't know if she would be comfortable doing that, as I'm assuming she's in high school and might not want to talk about sexually transmitted diseases.
