My fish seemingly has dropsy. Ive read a bunch of articles about the disease and how to treat it. But there are so many ways. I just want to ask if one of your fish have had dropsy before and how you cured it.

Its only been about 15 hours since my fish got it so...

There should be a chance to cure it...

  1. Dropsy isn't a disease, it's a symptom of a primary problem. Once a fish is showing dropsy, it's body is already beginning to shut down and is unlikely to recover. Dropsy is caused by the body no longer being able to regulate water within the body, causing swelling, and the internal organs will have begun to shut down.

This is either caused by internal parasites, internal bacterial infections, physical injury or something else.

  2. go to petco or petsmart and buy a medicne called melafix and put the recommended amount. don't over feed your fish again. that's how it happens.

  3. Cat is right.  This is one of the reasons you should not add salts or other chemicals to your tank.  Salts interfear with the fish's ability to properly use the water they absorbe.

There are really only recomended ways to treat dropsy.  Knowiing what is causing the dropsy is key  You can treat with an anti parasidic medicine (or medicated foods) for internal parasites.  Keep the water clean.

The symptoms of dropsy don't usually happen over night.

IF you catch and treat the disease in its early stages your fish can be saved.
