wat were the efforts to rescue pompeii.

this is due on this friday (tomorrow) so please help me !!!!!!!

  1. There was almost no attempt at rescue, since everyone was too involved in getting away from the area of Vesuvius, not towards it.

    No Roman troops were available in the area as suggested by the other answer - none were stationed in Italy at this time and only Rome had Urban Cohorts and a fire service.

    The only recorded rescue attempt was the sending of boats from across the Bay of Naples (the area of Puteoli and Misenum), but these were unable to reach many people on the coast near Herculaneum and Pompeii due to clouds of poison gas from the volcano. Pliny the elder was among those who made the attempt, landing warships at the beach near Stabiae - he died as a result of inhaling poison fumes and his crew quickly left without him.

    No rescue of the citizens of Pompeii was successful (only of some of those people who lived near Stabiae) and there was only a later clear-up operation to bury the bodies that were found in the countryside around - none in Pompeii itself, since it was entirely sealed under layers of volcanic ash.
