  1. Classmate Scavenger Hunt

Provide each student with two index cards. Ask each student to write a brief description of his or her physical characteristics on one index card and his or her name on the other. Physical characteristics usually do not include clothing, but if you teach the primary grades, you might allow students to include clothing in their descriptions. Put all the physical characteristic index cards in a shoe box, mix them up, and distribute one card to each student, making sure that no student gets his or her own card. Give students ten minutes to search for the person who fits the description on the card they hold. There is no talking during this activity, but students can walk around the room. At the end of the activity, tell students to write on the card the name of the student who best matches the description. Then have students share their results. How many students guessed correctly?

My name is _____, and if I were an animal I'd be a _____ because....

I demonstrate for my students: "My name is Mr. H., and if I were an animal, I'd be a turtle," I say, "because I'm always rushing around. Sometimes I wish I could slow down."

  2. I like people who....

Children sit in their chairs in a circle and there is one child in the middle without a chair. The child in the middle says I like people who... (anything from ...who are wearing black shoes, to who saw a particular movie, to who lives in an apartment, etc.) The children who believe they fit the statement stand up and try to get to a different chair. The child left standing is the child that starts the next round of I like people who.

  4. Get a couple of bags of M&M's.  Tell the kids that they can each take a small handful, but can NOT eat any.  Have them put them on napkins or in small bowls in front of them.  For each M&M they have to tell one fact about themselves.  You go first so you can show them how to stretch out if they need to.  For example, "I have two sisters," (one candy).  "One sister is Sally," (one candy).  "One sister is Lucy," (one candy).  "My brother is Fred," (one candy).
