I am in a choir, which I absolutely love, it is the best aspect of my life and I have been able to do so many things with this fantastic choir. This choir is for boys and girls, only once a boy's voice has broken, he has to leave, usually. I am a 14 y.o. boy, and my voice has fairly broken, but I think I can stay, at least for next year. I can still sing up high excellently, and I have good sightreading. The only problem that could prevent me from continuing is the break, or passaggio, in my voice. This means that I have difficulty singing smoothly between notes in the head voice and chest voice, sometimes I cannot sing the notes around my break at all, especially when I'm nervous. The break occurrs at around D just above middle C. How can I overcome this problem? I will be SO grateful if you can help me, because this choir means so much to me. I promise to give out Best Answer and its 10 points.

P.S. Please don't tell me to give singing a rest, or to forget about the choir, because then I will probably become depressed and die.

  1. i know what your talking about i had the same problem...all you can really do is give it time

your voice is changing, so you'll need to learn to control your new, lower voice to hit those high notes...once your voice completely changes it'll be alot easier to train your voice so it wont crack (by doing vocal exercises, ect.)

try warming up, drinking tea and relaxing your throat before you sing (ive heard a little honey helps too) and talk to your choir teacher to see if he can help you

  2. Hate to break it to you, but you gotta leave the choir for a while. Sorry. But IF you push it and stay on singing whilst your voice is breaking, you run the high risk of damaging your vocal chords permanently. Even the famous Welsh boy soprano Aled Jones (Google him if you have never heard of him) had to take a break for a few years to rest his voice, and now he's a lot stronger (as well as deeper, obviously).

Please don't push your voice; it's important to care for it. Besides, you want to be able to sing again in the near-future, right?

    PS love Melbs. Great city.
