Can someone please show the steps to solving this?

Write B = {x|x = 2y + 4, y element of I, 0<y<5} using the roster method. I represents the set of integers.

Thanks for any help.

  1. If 0<y<5 then y = 1,2,3,4 (The only integers in this range.)

    So 2y +4 = 6,8,10,12

    So B = {6,8,10,12}

  2. If y is an integer and 0<y<5, then the only allowable values for y are 1, 2, 3, and 4. Plug each one into the equation:

    2(1)+4=6

    2(2)+4=8

    2(3)+4=10

    2(4)+4=12

    Therefore, B = {6, 8, 10, 12}, if that's what you're asking.

  3. B = {x|x = 2y + 4, y element of I, 0<y<5}

    To find x we will need to substitute y values in the domain. Note you did not say y was an integer, so for instance y could equal 1.3, √2 and π.

    On the other hand if y were restricted to integers y is an element of {1,2,3,4}

    and x = 2*1 +4, x = 2*2 +4 etc.

    The solutions for y is roster form would be:

    {6,8,10,12}

    If y were not restricted to integers, we would have to subsitiute the limiting values for y, 0 and 5 to get:

    4< x < 14. Since in this case the solution is an infinite set of numbers, we would not be able to list x values in roster form.
