  1. Everything is bound by the laws of physics.

Upon contact of the cueball to the object ball, try imagining a line that connects the center of both balls- call this "line A". Then imagine another line that connects the cueball's current position(in contact w/ object ball) and its original position-call this "line B".

    Play the scenario:

As the Cueball hits the object ball, the object ball move along the path we marked as "line A". The white ball will then be taking the path perpendicular (90degrees) to "line A" but going away from "line B". This perpendicular path is called the "normal angle".

(This scenario only applies when you hit the cueball at its center)

    Curves:

    - You can apply a "spin" reaction on the cueball so that the cueball wont be moving along the normal angle. Hitting the cueball above the center will force it move forward after the impact. Similarly, hitting it below the center will cause it to draw back after the impact; or if it was a straight ball impact, hitting it just SLIGHTLY below the center will stop the cueball dead after impact. Hitting the cueball left or right will imply a left or right spin on the cueball AFTER IT HITS A CUSHION after making impact on the object ball. Now, you can combine these 4 basic spins to create top-left or bottom-right spins, etc. This is called controlling the cueball or positioning for the next shot. But that's for another chapter. Try learning the basics 1st.
