Question:

Please help me understand? I'm scared? Continuous planes?

I'm at college in Memphis and planes keep going overhead. I'm talking like more than one a minute. It's been doing this for like 20 minutes. I've never seen this many planes, going the exact same route, exiting one after the other like this. I'm from Nashville and I've seen my share of planes, but this is weird. Another one is going by while I type this. What could this be? I'm freaking out. Thanks.

  1. you live near an airport. and the wind direction has a lot to do with how the planes land and take off (they'll never go the same direction as the wind). so right now, the wind, in relation to the airport, is most likely coming from where you are, which is why they're taking off going towards you.

  2. Memphis airport is the main hub for Fedex, one of the worlds largest airlines.

This is a very busy time for the departure of cargo flights.Nothing to be scared of.

  3. memphis is the home of FEDEX

and it is a very busy airport

what you are witnessing is common and the routing for a bunch of planes has changed to direct them to come right over your house

  4. Around here we call them airports!

  5. I'm looking at the weather right now for that area and it looks like the remains of Gustov is on its way. It looks to me once it hits, its going to be there for a while.

Airlines don't want their planes sitting on the ground when that happens for two reasons. First off, they only make money when they are flying. If they are sitting, they are losing money.  Secondly, they don't want to risk getting any hail damage.

They probably want to get as many planes out of the area as quickly as they can in anticipation of something happening, weatherwise.
