Why does matter have mass and take up space?

Matter is whatever occupies space and can be percieved by our senses. Mass is a measure of the quantity of matter in such a material. There are things, like aerogels, that have very little density. But all matter has density. Gases are matter. Think of them in the liquid and solid states.
