I have golden oak cabinets. I went with a solid color in the kitchen and have thought about a border. I love grapes.

  1. I assume the rooms are connected.  If they open into each other, sometimes a blue in the same tone but a different shade looks nice and compliments what you have.  I was going to suggest grey, but if your countertops are grey, I'm not sure if you were trying to stay away from that.  I'm not big on borders, but there are some great stencils you can get - i like the look of lighter color stencilled onto same, darker color (ie: light blue on a dark blue).  Also, my **fave** is venetian plaster.  It's a great texture - i have it on my dining room and get some many compliments.  People are always touching it too.  You can check it out - Ralph Lauren paints carries it as does home depot.

  2. play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think "relentless olive" (# 6425) might look terrific with the navy blue.

You can also take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.
