Hi, I have had a lot of absences last semester in high school in eleventh grade. I had over 50 absences because I have post traumatic stress disorder. I failed 2 classes out of 6. I have not told my teachers because I didn't want to be put in special ed. Do you think they will give me my credits back if I tell them that I have had post traumatic stress disorder the whole time I missed school? Please help. I need those 2 classes to get enough credits to graduate.

  1. I'm sorry, but I don't think they would be able to do that. You would need to go through the whole IEP process to get this taken care of. Is there a reason you don't want to go in Spec. Ed? If you need it you should take advantage of it.

Talk to a counselor at school as soon as possible. The sooner you get in, the sooner you'll be able to work on getting those credits to graduate.

    Good luck.

  2. I don't think that you can get your credit back unless you can prove to them by taking a test to prove that you know the material if they allow you to do that. Also, don't assume that they will put you into special education because you have a disorder. You may have been eligible for a 504 plan which is different from Special Education. But the school administration should be aware of your disorder to see if accommodations could be made in your case. If your disorder was documented by a professional like a psychiatrist, you might have been eligible to receive instruction at home if your absenses were consistent or your teachers could have sent work home so that you could still complete the work. It might be too late to get the credit immediately to graduate but you won't know until you talk to staff at your school. And it doesn't hurt to go with some paperwork from your doctor or psychologist, etc. Good luck.

  3. Yes, definitely have yourself and/or your parents discuss PTSD with your school.  A school counsellor or social worker would likely be the best person to approach as they would be most familiar with PTSD.  It is doubtful that the school could or would change your grades, but they might be willing to switch it to an incomplete.  Also, if your teachers realize that you have issues that you are working on, they may be more willing to work with you or make accomodations for completing your work.

PTSD in itself wouldn't qualify you for Special Ed, but may allow for accomodations under the Civil Rights Act, Section 504.

You still need to step up and get to school and work hard to graduate, but it is possible.  Unfortunately, if you need help, you need to ask for it.  Good luck.

  4. i would deffinatly ask your parents to email the school. my friend has health problems too and misses a lot of school. since the school knows, they cut her a lot of slack. take summer school too!!

  5. Yes, definitly. Tell them. I mean, if you only failed two classes, it means you probably don't need special ed. Just tell them and you won't regret it, okay?

  6. They will not give you back your credits as you didn't do the work.  You will have to provide MEDICAL PROOF that you have post traumatic stress disorder first.  Like a note from your doctor stating you have been diagnosed with it.  Secondly, that is not reason enough to put you into special education.  Putting a student into special education is a long, process and a student usually qualified due to a learning disability, not necessarily an emotional disability.

You will probably have to take the classes over and get your diploma over the summer or do an extra semester of school to make up the classes.  sorry not an easy fix or probably the answer you wanted to hear.
