We found a cat not to long ago in our basement. We think she came in while the door was open and we found her the next morning. She was all skin and bones. You can feel the bones in her body. She devoured two bowels of cat food.

We have two cats already and we have been doing our part in feeding her. We have been feeding her kitten food to beef her up. The vet suggested it when we took our kitten in a month ago and we told him about this poor cat.

Well it's been 2 months now and you can still feel the bones in her body. She is so skinny. She does not have an ounce of fat at all. Yesterday she started acting different. She did not eat much and she looked very run down.

We are worried about her. We are going to try and get her to a vet. It is hard when we are trying to treat 2 other cats. It can be very costly.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong with her?

  1. Does the cat have diarrhea? Is she hydrated?  You can tell hydration by either gently squeezing the fur on her neck together.  If it stays up, she is dehydrated, if it falls right down, she is ok.  Also, if you are not sure about that and she will let you, check her gums.  If they are pale, it can mean dehydration.  If you can, use your finger and gently press on the gums, if they get their color back quickly, that's good, if the discoloration from pressing stays, that's bad.  If she is hydrated and eating (eating soft food would help hydrate her), she needs to go to the vet.  Would probably mean there is an illness keeping her from being able to eat or keep weight on.

  2. Be sure they do some blood tests - felv/fiv and a stool check for worms.   Start there.  Also check that she was not in heat - and now has a pyometra.  Hence, please do not wait to take her to the vet.  This may not be a good thing.

It sounds as if you are trying to do some nice things for these stray kitties.  But this one really needs to be seen asap.  Good luck to you all.
