what do one of these quotes mean???????

"Work keeps at bay three great evils: boredom, vice, and need."

The first quote means that this world we live in is the best world there could possibly be ... there couldn't possibly be a better one ... and that everything that happens in it is for the best, and no matter how bad everything seems to be, cheer up, because it will always turn out for the best in the long run.  The idea is that everything has a bright side to everything, even if we don't understand it.

    That was a favorite quote of Dr. Pangloss's, which he got from the philosopher, Leibnitz.   It was a popular idea in Voltaire's day, and one of Voltaire's main reasons in writing Candide was to ridicule that idea by showing how nothing turned out very well for Dr. Pangloss.

    The second quote means that if a person stays busy with his work then he wont be bored, wont fall into vices like  drunkenness, and wont be needy because he will earn his living.
