Please help me with this weight problem?

Question

My cat is a little overweight, and i want to help him lose the extra weight before it gets more serious (Diabetes, heart disease, etc.). So please, please give me a few tips on how to lose the weight gradually. Thanks in advance. :)

Switching to canned food will help you cat lose weight The ones with gravy will contain more sugar so avoid them.

If you go to the vet and ask whats a suitable amount of food for your cat to keep it at a healthy weight, they usually give you a cup where you can measuer the right amount. My cat was slight overweight, but after a few weeks he's already nearly lost all the extra weight.

You could also encourage your cat to play more, with string or letting him outside (ignore that if you do already!). I find that letting him chase his food (dry only) is a good way to get them exercising!

Change the type of food you feed him. When my cat Hector was overweight I feed him Hills Science Diet. Along with that, you should play with him lots, really tire him out. Make it so that he has to chase whatever he's playing with. Since cats can get bored easily you might need to buy a couple of new toys, or get some catnip.

What are you feeding him?  Odds are it's dry food with corn as the main ingredient.  That's loaded with carbohydrates which leads to chubby cats.  It's also rather low in protein and lacks any real meat.  

Switch your cat to a MEAT based food with little or no grain.  Innova Evo is an excellent one - 50% protein and no grain.  

Also be sure to include canned food in your cat's diet - a dry only diet is very bad.  

And ration the food - don't leave it out all day long.  Feed him in the morning and the evening.
