Please help me with this word problem!?

No matter how hard I try I just can't seem to figure out how to set it up. This is the problem:

A jar contains 40 coins consisting of dimes and quarters and having a total value of $4.90. How many of each kind of coin are there?

  1. There are 6 quarters, which make $1.50 and 34 dimes, which make $3.40.

    $3.40 + $1.50 = $4.90.

    6 coins plus 34 coins equals 40 coins.
