  1. portable external hard drives are cheap and easy, just plug them into the USB port and it shows up as another drive

  2. Fairly simple procedure.  The easiest non-technical way is to buy an external drive that is connected via USB.  Your computer will recognize it and viola, you will have the extra storage space.  If you get a new computer, you can simply unplug it and move it to the new rig.  If you feel a bit more technical, open the computer case and see what your motherboard supports.  Extra IDE channel or SATA channels.  Buy the appropriate hard drive.  If it is an IDE drive, be sure and set the jumper to slave.  If it is a SATA drive, the computer will set it to slave for you.  If you buy the drive in a retail package, it will come with an installation disk with directions on how to format the drive.  Once formatted, your computer will recognize it and show the new drive letter under my computer.  You can start saving info!!!  My advice would be to buy the USB external drive.  Easier to install, always portable, easy to switch to a new computer and not worry about migrating data.  It's plug and play.  Good luck!
