Please help potty training for my almost 3 year old son?

My son goes pee well. He stands now and goes great. He needs to be reminded or sometimes he wets himself.

Poo is a different story. He will go "hide" or run into another room then come back and tell me he went poo poo. 1 of 10 tries to go poo he will do it and get a cookie. The rest of the time he will sit on the potty for up to 20 minutes with nothing. Then as soon as he gets off he will poo in his pants.

As soon as the fall semester begins at his school they demand he is potty trained. I have 2 months. I would love to hear real suggestions or success stories to tackle the poo.

  1. I had the exact same problem!  My son was 3 1/2 and was starting preschool and he had to be fully potty trained or they wouldn't take him.  I tried everything!  The only thing that I found worked was a combination: 1) I had a basket of toys I got at the dollar store and if he went poo poo on the potty he got to pick a toy and 2) If he went poo poo in his underwear he had to clean it himself (of course I helped him a little).  He had to take his soiled underwear off, get toilet paper and discard of the poo in the toilet, wipe his own behind and put the dirty underwear into the washer for me to wash.  Two times of him having to do this and he never went poo in his pants again!  Good luck!

  2. Sounds like my son when he was little, what you need to do is sit on the toilet and put him on the potty chair in the bathroom and you poo and you show him that is how you go number 2.  Believe me it will work or have your boyfriend or husband show him.  My son would hide in the closet and poo until his father showed him where to go.

  3. as for him peeing make a game out of it put Cheerios in it and tell him to shoot the Cheerios.. and as for the poo its good that u are rewarding him with a cookie every times he goes in the bathroom.. but i can help u with that only the pee its been so long i cant remember what i did to make him poo in the potty ..

  4. Put him in underpants.  My son had the EXACT problem he did not want to go in the toilet.  I let him run around naked all day and he would wait until I put a diaper on him to go poo.

So I switched him to underwear.  He poo'd in them a couple times but once he realized the weren't diapers he quit.

DO NOT waste money on pullups.

  5. If you are using pull ups...get rid of them now.  Let him only wear underwear at all times, except when he is napping/sleeping.  It is a little harder to get past the sleeping thing, but if he is in pull ups he will only keep pooping in them.  If he is in underwear he will not p**p in them, and if he does it will only be the first couple of times.  As soon as I made my son wear underwear (just before his third bday also) he no longer went pee or p**p in his undies.  He still needs help wiping after pooping, but that is it.  He goes when he  needs to go and it is awesome.  Pull ups are a terrible waste of money and it will only prolong him pooping in his pants.

  6. Well I am going through the potty training thing as well. My son tells me when he has to pee but, like your baby he won't tell me when he has to poo poo but, after he finish he will tell me that the poo is " eew nasty" I want him to use the bathroom because he thinks that the potty is some sort of punishment then I give him a toy. At a children store they have a toddler toilet seat and it goes directly on the toilet. This should be a easy trick some of them even have little toddler steps just in case he is unable to reach the toilet seat. Give that a try and every time he goes to the bathroom himself reward him, make a big fuss about it even try and make a little song out of it. He'll love the attention from you mom and you'll get the potty training that you need. Let me know how it works out.
