  1. Surfing is not really easy to learn and takes a great deal of practice and patience. Most beginners learn on a longboard. This would typically be at least 3 feet taller than you (I'm 5'2" and learned on a 8'6" board). Longboards have more surface area on the water and are therefore more bouyant, easier to balance on and easier to catch a wave with.

A new board can cost several hundred dollars. You'll also probably want to get a wetsuit, which can be around $100. I use one even in the summer; it keeps you warm in the cool water, and also helps with bouyancy. I would suggest taking some lessons before you shell out all that cash. Where would you surf, and how often? All things to consider if you're gonna make a big purchase.

I am lucky enough to live on the Jersey Shore, so I am close to the ocean. Even though I get a lot of practice, I still consider myself a beginner. It takes a lot of practice to get the hang of it, so it might be tough if you live in Ohio.

Here are some sites to check out for beginners:

Good luck, surfing is truly a great sport!
