  1. it's important to understand the socialization process so that you know how to handle yourself in different situations. understanding social cues can prevent really awkward situations. i mean you have to know how to handle yourself amongst your friends, the kind of conversation that is appropriate to have w/ your grandparents, ministers, etc. versus the kind of talk in a bar, club, when you're drunk...you have to know when people are uncomfortable w/ you or when they don't want to talk and things like that so you can respond appropriately.

  2. firstly it is important to understand what the socialisation process is..

    - primary socialisation (the picture of the world our parents have blended together and told us..in simple terms what we learn about the world and society from out parents)

    - secondary socialisation (what societies institutions teach us about the world so that we can begin to create our own picture..agents of secondary socialisation include the school, religion, friends and the media)

it is important to understand the socialisation process as it helps us understand several things:

    - functionalists would say that it helps pass on society's norms and values in order to create consensus or harmony in society..everyone has a general idea of what is right and what is wrong

    - marxists would say that it passes on ruling class ideology (the norms and values of the ruling class) in order to create a reliable workforce out of the working class and keep them from rebelling and taking power from the ruling class

    - post modernists would say it helps us make the choices we want in life as we have a blurred path to follow if we choose to follow it

    - feminists would say it is to teach gender roles to children so that women do not rebel against the patriarchal society and get any power (similar to the marxist view except with gender rather than class)

    in general..

    - it helps the individual understand what is expected of them from society

    - it demonstrates where people form basic opinions from

    hope this helps..good luck :)
